How To Use An HVAC Air Handler

The HVAC air handler is a device that is used in ventilation systems. The HVAC air handler mostly consists of housing, the blower and heat exchange for heat or air conditioning. The air conditioning system is a fine example of the air handler. In an air conditioning system the air handler is the main unit. Also the air handler includes an air filter, cooling and heating coils, several dampers and a fan. There are quite a few ways to use the HVAC air handler, as these units are used for commercial and also in residential homes.

If the HVAC air handler is being used in a home they are usually found in a closet, garage, or sometimes in an attic. This unit is essential to AC unit forced heating air system. All of the AC units will need to have an air handler or a way for the air to move. This could be part of the furnace and will house the coils of the evaporator, motor for the blower and also the HVAC air handler controls. This can be a down flow, up flow or even a horizontal flow.

Anyone to determine which flow it is in a home will need to follow the duct. This return duct may originate wherever the HVAC filter is inside the home. Should the return end at the bottom of this unit then this unit is in the up flow. Should the return duct end at the top then it is in the down flow. Now if the unit appears to be lying on the side and the return duct is in one of the sides, then the HVAC air handler is in the horizontal flow.

Being able to understand this will certainly help to find the filter whenever it is needed to be changed. Most of the time, the HVAC air handler has the filter right inside. Should there be no filter in the grill or the return register then this means the filter could be inside the duct or even inside the unit. The air being filtered is important for the quality of the indoor air in the home and it is just as important to have the proper operation of this HVAC air handler unit too.

The air that travels through this unit should be filtered before it ever has the chance to reach the heat exchange or evaporator coils. Should the system not be operating with this condition, then over a period of time there will be a huge build up of debris and dust and will only become sucked into the return.

This will create a problem as the build up will clog off the coil of the evaporator and this will cause the heat exchanger to then operate at temperatures that are much higher than normal. This will make the HVAC air handler less efficient and sooner or later will fail and lose its ability to either heat or cool the home.

The HVAC air handler, like anything else, will need maintenance checks. This can help to avoid costly repairs. When there is a need to have some work done with the HVAC air handler it is advised to use caution before ever opening the panel. It would be much safer to allow a HVAC air handler technician to operate the unit when the panel is removed. Any time the metering device or electro mechanical controls need to be checked on, then it should be by an HVAC air handler professional.

These types of components are highly technical and should always be left for a professional to handle. However, the motor of the blower for the HVAC air handler can be maintained by the owner of the home as long as safety and some common sense is used in the process.
